« Home MemorandumThe International Conference of Baltic Archives Abroad was held at the Estonian Literature Museum in Tartu from June 27 to July 1, 2006. The conference was organized by the Estonian Literary Museum, the National Archives and the Karl Ristikivi Society. There were 120 participants from 10 countries: Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Russia, USA and Estonia. The participants (under signed organizations) have decided that we should: 1. guarantee the preservation and open access to the Baltic/Estonian archives abroad regardless of their location, and according to the legislation, regulations, and tradition of the host countries; 2. be more effective in clarifying the location of Baltic/Estonian archives and cultural treasures abroad, both in exile communities and in the homeland; 3. create an electronic gateway to information on the Baltic /Estonian archival collections abroad, with the aim of ensuring access to relevant information; 4. pay particular attention to the condition of the collections and the creation of appropriate conditions and creating master and user copies of relevant items; 5. develop an international cooperation network on Baltic/Estonian archives abroad, covering the memory institutions, research institutions, diplomatic and other institutions in the homelands and abroad, as well as the worldwide Baltic ethnic communities, societies, organizations and individuals. To support the creation of study groups in the worldwide ethnic communities. To establish an international/national working group/s; 6. spread archival knowledge by publicizing relevant informative material (publications, websites), by organizing seminars, training programs, etc; 7. support studies on the history and culture of the Baltic/Estonian diaspora; 8. organize joint specific collection campaigns (life stories, history of cultural societies, of Baltic/Estonian houses, etc). 9. propose that the Journal of Baltic Studies publish a special issue on the theme of Baltic archives abroad; 10. publish a multilingual electronic version of the presentations at the International Conference on the Baltic Archives Abroad; 11. organize the next International Conference on the Baltic Archives Abroad in 2009.
